Director’s message

At the time of writing, the Australian Electoral Commission has announced the Australian Labour Party has won enough seats to form a majority government. This appears to augur well for the higher education sector at large, and for the learning abroad sector. Assurance has been given that the NCP program has support from the incoming government, although what that might look like once the dust has settled remains to be seen.

As we all know, new governments rarely maintain the status quo in terms of resourcing and even nomenclature – remember Asiabound, the initial outbound mobility grants program initiated under the Gillard government? Hopefully there is little disruption to life as we currently know it.

A mid-year internship provides a lovely escape from the cold down under, and while numbers are small, it is wonderful to be finally welcoming back in-country interns. On the hosting front, we have many companies seeking interns, either remotely or in-country, as they scale back up after two years of disruption and lockdowns.

In particular, law and communications students are in demand, and some exciting new opportunities for those with an interest in environmental issues such as sustainable climate change solutions, recycling and upcycling, and decarbonization initiatives.

Also, we welcome a number of new hosts including Linfox with opportunities in logistics, and others providing experiences in business consulting for strategic development, and digital communications and outsourcing.

On the customized programs front, we are back in business developing our conservation and environment study tour for long-term partner Deakin, reworking an earlier version of a food science and nutrition program, and finally getting the green light on a Music study tour that has been in discussion for a number of years. Not only are we excited at the chance to welcome these groups, our local partners and hosts are incredibly excited to once again welcome and engage with groups of students and academics, and share their experiences and knowledge.

As Australia welcomes winter, the weather is hotting up in KL, and the heavy rains of recent months are abating, providing a warmer alternative for the rest of NCP scholars soon to join us here in KL! Also exciting, now that people can travel, to be receiving visitors, with Kirrilee Hughes driving up from Singapore for a catch-up, and former interns returning to visit (and yes I do have another shirt J).

Best wishes to all those travelling to NAFSA for the first time in years, and look forward to seeing many of you again at IEAA in August.

Generation Asia: Keeping Connected

Australia-Asia Youth Engagement after the pandemic

With over 60% of the world's youth living in the Asia Pacific, this report was created with contributions from 20+ young people through the Young Leaders Forum.
It explores the impact the pandemic had on young Australians' engagement with youth across Asia.

Varied and creative solutions for sustaining Australia-Asia youth engagement are also highlighted, reinforcing the need for increased learning abroad options in Asia.

Vietnam Internships

Students can expect more than just a placement abroad out of a TGS Internship in Vietnam. It's an eye-opening, heart-warming, life-changing, global learning experience.
Internships range in duration anywhere from 4 weeks to 6 months, depending on the organization of choice. Most organizations are based in Ha Noi and Ho Chi Minh City.

Internship opportunities range from research, business, IT, architecture, communication, and financial assistant to climate adaptation agricultural technician to name a few. The program is customizable as per students' academic requirements and professional goals. While most internships are being offered as remote or in-person, some are limited to in-person only like lab assistant with Hanoi University of Public Health and Electrical and Electronic/Mechanic/Renewable Engineering intern with 1516 Green Energy among others. Please use the link below for more information according to your preferences.
We use our local logistical knowledge to meet students' budgets, combining academic interest with cultural immersion and some fun!

Volunteer Vietnam

We work with our partner Volunteer Vietnam to support disadvantaged and abandoned adults and children of Da Nang and the Mekong Delta. As Vietnam continues to prosper, and the regions are becoming more developed, there are many people who have fallen between the cracks. Volunteer programs provide an opportunity for groups of students to develop leadership and teamwork skills, with improved communication and closer relationships reported as a result. Past programs have included student leaders from campus residence teams, global citizen programs and student-led campus leadership or Asian focused programs.

TGS contract with Study Melbourne Hub ends 30 June

Effective 1 July 2022, the Study Melbourne Hub will transition to a new operating model wherein the Hub will be directly managed by the Victorian Government Trade & Investment Kuala Lumpur office. Throughout this transition, the Hub remains operational with no disruption to the programs and events taking place. Moving forward, Cassandra Tam, the VGTI Education Services Director for Malaysia will oversee Hub delivery and activation, working closely with the Hub team to grow the Hub's presence and network in Malaysia.

VGTI will introduce you to the new Hub Manager and Hub Coordinator over the coming months. Stakeholders can keep abreast of events at the Hub and or book in their own events via Study Melbourne Hub Kuala Lumpur | Study Melbourne Hubs | Study Melbourne

We would like to extend our thanks to Global Victoria and the VGTI for providing the opportunity to manage the initial project, and for their partnership and leadership in the setup of the KL Hub. JMD Consulting is proud of the role we have played in ensuring the successful launch and opening of the Hub that has been fully operational since November 2021.

IEAA Learning Abroad Forum

We are really looking forward to the IEAA Learning Abroad Forum to be held in Melbourne on Thursday 18 and Friday 19 August 2022. How wonderful to finally be getting together with everyone after such a long hiatus. We will also participate in the Learning Abroad Exchange Circuit where we can, so please reach out if you would like us to attend or even to just meet with mobility teams or other parts of the university that could use an understanding of how our programs work.
