Overview
Internships in environment and sustainability were once in the domain of environmental NGOs, government agencies, and research institutions. With the introduction of mandatory reporting of ESG’s, consulting firms have moved into this space and publicly listed companies are employing new staff with a strong focus on sustainability. Many local community-based organizations and NGOs have emerged in recent years in response to the rapid development of roads and housing projects that encroach on the green lungs and corridors of Kuala Lumpur. Australia’s largest clothing recycling plant has been set up in Malaysia and has developed an upcycling program that provides work for women from low-income families and refugee communities while reducing the amount of textiles that might usually end up in landfills.
Opportunities
Environmental Research - Assist in conducting research on environmental issues, Collect and analyze data, and support the development of reports and recommendations.
ESG and Sustainability - Work on sustainability initiatives within an organization, help develop and implement sustainability strategies, audit and assist in tracking and reporting on sustainability metrics.
Environmental Education - Assist with community-based Citizen Scientist program, develop educational materials on localized topics, help organize and participate in outreach events
Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) - Assist in implementing environmental CSR programs, contribute to sustainability reporting, and support initiatives related to social and environmental responsibility (recycling program)
Conservation - Work on projects focused on biodiversity conservation, assist in habitat restoration efforts and participate in wildlife monitoring and research.
Climate Action Policy - Assist in researching and analyzing environmental policies, contribute to the development of policy recommendations, research legislative changes related to the environment in SMEs.
Waste Management (Textiles) - Contribute to waste reduction and recycling of textiles, analyze community/workplace waste disposal practices and recommend improvements, assist in developing waste management strategies, assist in community awareness.
