What to Wear
Malaysia is a multicultural country with its official religion being Islam. Therefore, office attires are asked to be respectful and appropriate to all. The dress codes in most public schools, public universities, and government offices require you to dress in a more business manner than you may do in Australian schools. However, main cities like Kuala Lumpur and Selangor are practicing a more modern lifestyle.
Casual clothing of your choice is acceptable outside of the office.
Please be respectful of the culture and pay attention to the information below.
Inside the Office
Women
Office attire - Loose-fitting pants or a mid-length skirt matched with a covered top, with sleeves at least three-quarters length.
Men
Office attire - long pants, button-down shirts, ties, and dress shoes.
Everyone
Sports shoes are not recommended for government offices.
Long hair is to be kept neatly pulled back and tied.
Facial hair should be shaven or neatly trimmed.
In some offices
Visible tattoos are to be covered by clothing or make-up.
Out of Office
In most states in Malaysia, casual clothing is acceptable.
Except for Kelantan, Terengganu, and certain areas of Pahang.
Bikinis, spaghetti string tops, overly revealing clothing, and see-through clothes are strictly a big no-no.
